Prior to his work at Sanborn, he was a high school math teacher in Massachusetts and served for six years on the school board in his local community.

Brian has worked nationally as a speaker, consultant and expert coach for a number of schools and organizations engaged in personalized learning work. He has co-authored three books with fellow NHLI colleague Jonathan Vander Els on this topic: Breaking With Tradition: The Shift to Competency Based Learning in PLCs at Work (2017), Unpacking the Competency-Based Classroom: Equitable, Individualized Learning in a PLC at Work (2022), and Elevating Competency-Based Learning in a PLC at Work: Actionable Assessment, Defensible Evidence, and Equitable Grading (2024). He has also written countless educational articles that have been published by multiple professional organizations over the last decade.

The shift to a CBE system causes schools to reflect on their core values and what system-changes will be needed to support the model. I love diving deep into these issues with educators.
